Understanding your audience
Barb and I went last Friday to watch Paul McCartney play Safeco Field along with 45,000 of our closest friends. To be blunt, it’s the best concert I’ve ever been to and maybe the best event. Sir Paul at 71 years young can still rock the house, engage an audience, and be cool for people from 5 to 85 years old. It was simply spectacular that after 50 years, McCartney can still bring it for 3 hours without a break.
Part of his skill is knowing is audience. Here he is in Seattle and he does a guitar tribute to Seattle legend Jimi Hendrix. That got the older crowd really going. Then as his encore was about to hit fever pitch, he turned it loose by inviting the members of Seattle’s own Nirvana to join him on stage. It was basically a Nirvana reunion concert with McCartney playing front man. They stayed with him for the final 7 songs (including the next encore). He had Seattle eating out of his hand and no one there will ever forget it.
Do you do that for your customers? Do you understand them and their needs? Do you use that to give them unforgettable experiences? Do you rest on your laurels or are you constantly taking them and your business to new heights no matter how long you’ve been doing it? And (final question) are you still having as much fun doing it?
McCartney still does. So should you.
