I’ve found my golf ball lying in many a predicament on the golf course.

Those of you who play the game know the empty feeling in the pit of your stomach as you identify your ball in some crappy place.

It might be in a bush, behind a tree, or buried in a sand trap. Whatever the calamity is, one thing holds true. There is an inner acceptance of the fate and then playing the ball where it lies.

Make no mistake. We will complain about the bad luck. We will bemoan the fate. We may even spew a few profanities. But then we regroup quickly and play the shot where it lies.

Because that’s the game.

Our lives are no different.

Through either no fault of our own, or completely because of us, we can find ourselves in precarious positions. Our “next shot” must be played regardless of the challenge. These challenges might be financial, health, relationship, or worry. The situation might seem bleak; like there’s no successful solution.

The very best golfers – including those who just simply enjoy the game – will rise to the challenge and keep playing. The next shot may not immediately extricate them from trouble, but it does create momentum.

The most successful and happiest people do the same in their businesses, careers, and lives.

They accept the situation, consider the best strategy to play the next shot, and then do their best playing it.

Life is really played on an ongoing course that is filled with disappointment and failure. It’s how we are able to manage expectations and deal with disappointment and failure in order to find the reward.

The reward is that each day is unique and special and meant to be played from where we are, not necessarily where we wish we were. If one lives their life wishing they were playing a different ball, then they they will always be searching for something out of reach.

However, if we can accept where we are is where we are supposed to be, then good things are bound to happen with the right momentum.

Because that’s the game.

“Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
