From my personal Facebook post on Sunday evening…
I feel very strongly about taking a personal stand on the events that have been unfolding around our country. One of the ways I believe that we can all grow and be better is putting more actions into our words. To that end, I made this statement on Sunday and want to share it here. In respect to the guests I had scheduled for the June 1 launch of my new videocast, I waited an additional day to post.
I’m at a loss of words to describe how I’m feeling on the events of the last week. The sad part is that it’s more than the last week; it’s been ongoing for years, decades, and centuries. And to say I’m “sad” doesn’t adequately cover it.
I have no idea what racism and social injustice feels like because I’ve never experienced it. And because of that, I can’t actually speak to it well, if at all. What I do know is that I need to be better informed, better educated, and a better advocate for my African-American friends and fellow human beings, and anyone else that feels discriminated against.
I had a brief correspondence with my friend, whom I consider one of the best people I’ve ever known. He recommended a book by Tim Wise titled, White Like Me. He knows and respects Mr. Wise’s work and that was good enough for me. So starting now, I hope that I can do more than just say I don’t like it. I can be a better role model for my grandchildren if I can tell them that I actually took steps to improve.
