Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning.
That means six more weeks of Winter, so time to hunker down, right?
My guess is that Phil thinks this all might be a bit overblown. He likely isn’t scared of his shadow and is ready to get back to work.
Winter implies cold, wet, snowy, windy, and generally miserable weather. Many on the East Coast of the United States would attest to that right now. The human reaction might be to hunker down under warm blankets and wait until Spring! It’s as if we are scared of our own shadows.
I don’t think in general we as humans think big enough. We are prone to be scared of failure and all the baggage that might come with it.
In the midst of a global pandemic that will probably still affect us for most of this year, we may look at our business, see our shadow, and forecast a lot of winter ahead. We might be reticent to invest in innovation, coaching, development, new markets, equipment, or anything that might involve risk.
That’s the equivalent of hunkering down under a bunch of blankets waiting for the storm to pass. The better play is to seek out opportunities to grow your business. That means expanding your boundaries, investing in yourself and your people, and boldly thinking bigger than you ever have before. It’s about being “unleashed.”
While Phil may burrow back into the ground for the rest of Winter because that’s what groundhogs do best, what you do best needs to be promoted now. Don’t wait for Spring to come, but rather spring into action.
Think bigger today than you ever thought before. There’s no better time than now to leap out of the shadows.
