My daughter Kelli has gotten me hooked on interval training for running. The intervals are one minute in duration…one minute of running followed by one minute of walking. Rinse and repeat for the entire time you choose to run. It’s enhanced my enthusiasm for running, made the process more manageable, and (this is the most important) dramatically improved my performance.
My pace has increased slightly (from 10 1/2 to about 11 1/2 minutes per mile), however my ability to run/walk longer with less stress and more energy at the end has improved. And, I’m having more fun. While the initial metric looked like it didn’t make sense, the interval training actually enhanced the entire experience.
I talk with too many business professionals – especially CEOs and business owners – that could use a little interval training. The pace they set for themselves is too daunting. Too much work without a respite for clearing the mind, relaxing the spirit, and recharging the proverbial battery. While at first glance, the metric looks like working harder and longer makes more sense, the stark reality is that doing that too long will bring about exhaustion, anxiety, and epic collapse.
Take a cue from my newfound interval training. Intentionally plan to alter your course to better mix in life balance with work. In the end, your pace may slow down but your performance and experience will be greatly improved, making your company, your career, and your life exponentially better.
