“What do you think of our Christmas tree?”

This was the question I posed my granddaughters when they entered the house last Thursday. Ellie and Maddie were staying the weekend and plans were to help us decorate for Christmas.

Ellie stood in what I can only describe as sheer disbelief as she stared at the 4-foot tall fake tree with white lights. Her response was stoic…

“You have a very short tree…”

On Tattoos and You

On Tattoos and You

If you’re like me, you remember the days in business were tattoos were taboo.

It was judged to be unprofessional to have tattoos visible to others. If you wanted to get a tattoo, that was okay, but it better not be seen or you might not be able to get or keep a “professional” job.

Where there was a time that tattoos were only for bikers and hippies (I exaggerate but you get my point), today they are almost ubiquitous. If you would have told me even 10 years ago that I’d have four of my own, and that they aren’t exactly hidden, I’d have said you were nuts!

Tattoos are a discernible expression of identity.

Who the Heck Are You?

Who the Heck Are You?

One of the biggest challenges in business and in life is how we identify ourselves. Imposter syndrome is real. I’ve observed successful business leaders who admit to still lacking confidence, and are worried about being “found out.” I’ve met business owners who identify their worth based on how successful (or not) their business is. They get wrapped up into believing that people view and judge them based on what they do, rather than who they are.

“C6…”

That’s what my chiropractor said to his his assistant after I told him that I was feeling numbness in my left index finger and thumb. I had explained that it was happening occasionally out of the blue.

Dr. Tom explained how C6 is responsible for those two digits. He promptly performed my bi-monthly maintenance adjustment, with a few changes based on the C6 discussion.

It worked.

He thanked me for asking about the issue, as he would not normally have looked for it.

I understood long ago working with Dr. Tom that I shared any peculiarity with him that dealt with my body and how I felt. Almost always, there was something he could adjust to get me back and “aligned” to power forth in life.

The challenge we often face in both business and life is that we aren’t always good at asking the right questions. Heck, sometimes we don’t ask any questions at all!

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs

Last Tuesday about noon, I was getting my workout in when all of a sudden, my wrist blew up…

Well, figuratively, not really.

My Apple Watch and iPhone simultaneously bellowed the emergency broadcast alert that we had a tornado warning.

A reminder that I live in the Seattle area.

Hot Takes

Hot Takes

Hot takes are ubiquitous in politics and sports….

We hear them from the media…and not just those people who consider themselves professional media, but also those on social media. Hot takes are those pearls of “wisdom” that often come as knee-jerk reactions to events happening in real life.

Journalists and columnists use them to create a platform to be heard. I actually enjoy following along on Twitter during football games and golf tournaments to see what the experts are thinking and uncovering. We see them from professional media on both sides of the political football field, waxing poetic based on either their gut instinct or simply wanting to be contrarian and controversial.

And we as a society eat it up…

How Do You Age?

How Do You Age?

Captain Jack and Bella are getting old.

That’s a hard thing for me to admit, as it seems like just yesterday they were “young dogs.” They arrived on the heels of saying goodbyes to Blondie (who we had for over 16 years) and Charlie (over 7 years). I recall thinking that it was a great time to be in a stage where a long life was in front of them.

I can see the decline in certain areas…
