The terrible tragedy at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis that killed eight employees was perpetrated by a gunman that was a former employee.

We’ve seen this before.

We often find that there is a relationship between an armed intruder and the employer, or sometimes employees of the business. There have been cases of estranged relationships that “entered” into the facility. In this case, it was a former employee with a score to settle.

In a business world that is growing more virtual, we can’t forget that many offices and facilities still have employees. It should be the job of the employer as part of its Business Continuity and safety program to assure that the employees are protected from intruders, even if they appear to be a known face.

Make this part of your planning. Every business that this happened to thought it only happened to someone else.
