Surviving the Storm
Last week, I had the great pleasure of being in Wisconsin Dells, WI to speak at a conference full of outstanding insurance professionals. On Thursday, the program went very well and after lunch, I was in need of a little exercise. I changed into shorts and t-shirt, grabbed my iPhone and started listening to my standard exercise classics like Heart and Def Lepard.
The area had a good place to walk around the campus and after the first “lap,” I decided to go for another round. As I began, I sensed a change in the weather. At the time I started, it was 82 degrees and sunny. All of a sudden, I felt a change in the air and the wind, and saw a big, dark, ominous cloud that seemed to be heading in my direction. Something told me that it was prudent to head back to the hotel…soon! Within 10 minutes, the rain and thunder were upon us and it was bouncing hard off cars. In 15 minutes, it was gone again and the sun returned.
You need to be cognizant of storm clouds in your business and life. In the majority of instances, you can actually see them coming yet aren’t paying attention or choose to not take preventative measures. Some days, you need to stay dry and live to fight another day. In addition, when you do find yourself in the midst of that “storm,” don’t panic. Storms tend to blow over eventually (not always as quickly as the midwestern storm I saw), and are rarely fatal. Spending too much time focused on the negative keeps you from finding solutions. Be committed to being aware and staying positive and you will outlast the storms in your life.
