This past Sunday, NFL Red Zone celebrated its 200th “episode.” In other words, for the past 200 Sundays, Red Zone has been airing seven-plus hours of NFL football without commercials.
For those unfamiliar with NFL Red Zone, this programming is available as a paid channel on cable, satellite, and Internet for National Football League fanatics like me. They have a studio host who skillfully manages all the games that are playing concurrently, focusing on those where a team is in the “red zone,” which is defined as being in scoring territory.
NFL Red Zone began as a service to broadcast games for fans who had three different needs – following their fantasy football players; watching their favorite teams; and providing options for those who didn’t want to be confined to whatever games the major networks chose to air. By eschewing all television commercials, fans got everything they wanted for a full day of football enjoyment.
NFL Red Zone identified a need for its audience and offered a solution at a small fee.

The pandemic crisis emphasized and accelerated the importance of a membership-based option for any business. There is a growing need in your customer and client world for increased access to you and your products and services; for faster service or delivery; and for just-in-time response.
Business owners and entrepreneurs can’t afford to take a disinterested attitude on this issue because they don’t think it applies to them. That’s a sure way to become abandoned by what might have once been a loyal base.
This process is a critical part of business continuity planning. While it’s easy to think of risk management as handling perils like fire and cyber attacks, there may not be any bigger calamity than decreasing revenue.
Your assignment as we move towards a new calendar year – find one new way to build your “eco-system” of evangelists. Understand the pain points, frustrations, and immediate needs of that community. Then develop a new program that will create immediate interest because you are solving problems and adding great value.
By doing this, you will be going a long way to keeping your company in the red zone of relevance and success.
