Cyber security should take front stage in the mind of every CEO and business leader or executive.

If you think the government, big business, and social media platforms are the only places cyber criminals are prowling, you are sadly mistaken.

On Monday, the Washington Post published an article co-written by Ben Fox and Frank Bajak titled, US agencies, companies secure networks after huge attack. The first couple paragraphs state all you need to know…

“U.S. government agencies and private companies rushed Monday to secure their computer networks following the disclosure of a sophisticated and long-running cyber-espionage intrusion that experts said almost certainly was carried out by a foreign state. It was stark evidence of the vulnerability of even supposedly secure government networks, even after well-known previous attacks.”

Cyber security is a real threat to everyone. All cyber attacks have specific objectives – to steal information and cause chaos and fear.

I’ve heard many small business owners say, “I don’t have anything to steal in my computer. Why would anyone care about me?”

The reality is that small businesses are the low-hanging fruit for cyber criminals. The have the ability to steal client and employee Personal Identifiable Information (PII), set up fraudulent wire transfers, hold access to your information hostage, and damage your reputation. We know the United States government is hard to break into. How vulnerable is your company?

You can make a difference when it comes to securing your information and intellectual property. Some of the steps needed can be done internally, while some might require outside help. All of them are worth your time and financial investment. You also need to have cyber liability insurance. All cyber insurance policies are not the same. You need to have someone with knowledge and skill in programming a policy and finding the right insurance company for you.

As we head into 2021, cyber crime will continue to increase. Are you prepared to properly protect your information and liability?
