Dan Weedin Unleashed-40This Week’s Focus Point: What’s the Opportunity Today?

Captain Jack wakes up every morning smelling opportunity.

Dogs have a unique approach to life. Unlike humans, they use their olfactory senses to apprise the day in front of them. Many a human (including me at times) has rolled over in bed when the alarm rings and immediately thinks, “I don’t want to get out of bed…” Why? Because we dread the day in front of us. The “same old, same old.” The “grind.” The “I don’t want to do (fill in the blank) again…” Don’t tell me it doesn’t happen because I know it does. Since we use our vision (which is much more limited than a dog’s nose) as a sensory, we see the same routine and simply dread the future day. This can go on for weeks, months, and years if not stopped.

Captain Jack senses opportunity. The same yard he scrutinizes every day isn’t ordinary. It’s remarkable in new smells, new adventures, and new opportunity.

I’ve learned from Jack. My morning alarm is the Monday Night Football theme song. When I roll out of bed, my first thought is now, “What’s the opportunity today?” So should yours. Every day is rife with opportunities if we are aware, positive, and stay in the moment. I encourage you to eschew dread and sniff out good fortune by asking yourself…

What’s my opportunity today?
