This past weekend was “Girls Weekend” at my house, when my perfect granddaughters came to to visit. We call them “The Pep Girls” and “Hurricane ELMA” for a reason.

So this week, I’m writing late and decided to just simply share some “random digressions” of things that caught my attention this past week.

I hope you enjoy…

  • The Summer Olympics have finally started in Tokyo. I’ve watched the Olympics since the 1976 games in Montreal. As much as I revel in watching all the competitions, the fact that they are even going on in the midst of COVID-19 and the delta variant is , well, crazy. According to what I’ve read, over 80% of Olympians are vaccinated, but even as I write this, previously vaccinated golfer Jon Rahm had to withdraw due to a positive test. I feel like I’m holding my breath for all those people participating in Tokyo, whether as an athlete, coach, judge, or whatever role. Then we will all hold our collective breath when they return home.
  • Speaking of COVID, while I know many of us are worn out and ready to move on from this pandemic that has gripped our world the past 18 months, we still need to be clear that it’s still hanging around. For all those people decrying government intervention and restrictions on business, then now’s the time to step up to the plate. Either get vaccinated or wear your mask. If the delta variant continues on the track it is, and the summer months do what they did last year for spread, we could be looking at more regulations and potential lockdowns in the future. If we really want to keep business and lives moving forward, then it’s up to all of us to do our parts. Yes, I’m vaccinated. Everyone can make their own choice, and if the choice is to not be vaccinated, fine, but then wear the damn mask.
  • Regardless of what you think of Jeff Bezos, what happened last week was truly remarkable. An autonomous “vehicle” rocketing into space with four civilians successfully was a thrill to watch. Make no mistake, most of the creations we enjoy today were originally forged and/or financed through wealth. Air travel, television, personal computers, and mobile phones were once considered to be luxuries of the affluent. What we witnessed last week may one day be a common occurrence for our great-grandchildren.
  • Riding along with Bezos was a truly remarkable person. Wally Funk was a standout pilot, engineer and should have been astronaut. All her credentials pointed to her being on a space mission with NASA, but because she was a woman, she was denied. Kudos to Bezos for recognizing that this 82-year old exceptional human got the opportunity of a lifetime that should have occurred half a century before.
  • One final “random” thought on Wally Funk. She is 82 years old and became the oldest person ever to rocket into space. She came out of the capsule waving to the crowd. Can there be any excuses for us?
  • Final random digression. When one digs deep to look at what it takes to be an Olympic athlete or tan astronaut, there are many similarities. Talent. Perseverance. Strength. Endurance. Toughness. Grit. Sacrifice. Investment. And in all cases, a team was needed. That includes family and friends; coaches and trainers; sponsors and communities. I’m always in awe of achievement, resilience, and overcoming adversity. We see it in so many places. While sports and space made the headlines this past week, let’s take those same qualities into our own worlds this week. And then the next. And continue to rinse and repeat.

Note: Next week, I’m embarking on a new program around being “Unleashed.” The concepts will be around advancing motivation, inspiration, and ideas for you to create a more rewarding life.
