This is my annual 4th of July post for Extra Points. As a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, I am happy to share with you this tradition that I started several years ago.

The following video is the reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is finely performed by actors you know, led by Morgan Freeman. The document was not meant to be read, said John Adams, but to be heard. As you listen to the words being spoken with such passion and feeling, try to imagine yourself in that time and hearing the majestic words of Thomas Jefferson. Okay, maybe I sound a little sappy. I accept that. However, we can never forget the sacrifices, character, and courage of the signers of the Declaration, and what it ultimately means for all of us in this country, and to those around the world.

This week’s quotes – “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
