Listen:

“Dear George, Remember no man is a failure who has friends. Thanks for the wings! Love, Clarence.”

My favorite movie of the holiday season (and one of my favorites of all time) is the Frank Capra Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. The quote that starts this missive is from George Bailey’s guardian angel Clarence. They are the words that he inscribed on the inside of the book Tom Sawyer, which was given as a gift to George. You all know the story. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve watched this scene with Auld Lang Syne playing in the background, it always makes my eyes sweat.

In the midst of all the crazy we have been through this year, friendship is a constant, if we choose.

Friendship don’t mean all smiles and harmony.

In fact, friendship is at its finest when there is dialogue and debate; tough love and encouragement; and empathy and forgiveness.

In the movie, George Bailey (portrayed brilliantly by James Stewart) learns just how valuable his life has been to others because of friendship. He comes to understand the friendship that has also been extended to him. In the end, we all learn that the simple concept of friendship can be underrated, yet so critically important to each one of us as we make this journey through life.

The best friends we have will tell us the truth. They will answer when we are in need. They will reach out when we least expect it. And real friends will agree to disagree and remain friends regardless of politics or postures.

One final thought. Family and friends are two different things. Just because one is related doesn’t automatically mean friendship. You are very fortunate when you can combine the two, and I have been fortunate and blessed because of it.

We all probably have had times in our lives where we felt just like George Bailey did the moments before he meets Clarence. Our saving grace is friendship. You don’t need a lot, you just need the right ones. My wish for you now and into the future is that you not only have the right ones, but are the right one to others.

Be unleashed.

Quote of the Day:

“Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. And when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole.”

~ Clarence the Guardian Angel
